How to choose the right lubricant for your vaginal microbiome.
During a consult, you might hear us ask about which lubricant you use. This is because not all lubricants are right for everyone!
Some can disrupt vaginal pH, increase the risk of infection, or may not be compatible with certain barrier methods (eg. Condoms).
When selecting a lubricant, avoid ingredients like glycerin, propylene glycol, parabens, petroleum jelly and sugars as they can upset the natural balance of healthy bacteria and lead to irritation or infections.
Key factors to consider:
pH: Affects the balance of healthy bacteria. Aim for 3.8-4.5
Osmolality: Ensures the lubricant won’t dry out or damage sensitive tissues
Water vs. Oil-Based Lubricants:
Water-based: versatile, safe with condoms, and easy to clean up.
Oil-based: hydrating to sensitive, fragile skin, last longer but are NOT compatible with latex condoms.
Using a microbiome-friendly lubricant helps maintain this balance, reducing irritation, infections, and discomfort, particularly for those prone to issues like thrush or BV.
